Black Forest Cupcake

I love making cupcakes, they are just so fun and I love decorating them. It gives me all of the feels of decorating a cake on a much smaller level. I knew I wanted to create a black forest cupcake for this Valentine’s Day 14 days of baking.

When I was planning out the concept of these cupcakes I knew I wanted to use real maraschino cherries and I wanted to make marshmallow buttercream for the frosting. I also knew I wanted to make it easier on myself and not make every single thing from scratch. So I did use a box cake mix. But if you are ambitious then by all means, make a devil’s food cake for the cupcake part.

Cake

  • 1 box Devil's Food cake mix plus ingredients stated on the box
  • milk
  • egg
  • chocolate pudding mix

Toppings

  • marachino cherries
  • Valentine's Sprinkles

Instructions

Cupcake

  • Prepare the Devil's Food cake mix according to the box, except substitue the water for milk, add an extra egg, and a small packet of chocolate pudding mix. Adding these things in will cause the batter to puff up more and make the texture to be fluffy and light.
  • Bake at the temperature the cake mix box suggests, and if you are baking the large cupcakes then bake for 20-25min or until inserting a toothpick comes out clean. If you are baking regular sized cupcakes, bake them according to the directions on the box. Let cool completely. While waiting for the cupcakes to cool make the marshmallow buttercream, link for the recipe will be below in the notes.
  • Once the cupcakes are completely cooled, take a small cylindrical cookie cutter, or I actually use an apple corer to make a hole in the center of each cupcake. You only want to make the hole go down halfway.
  • Place a marachino cherry (without the stem) in the center of each hole. Take the marshmallow frosting and prepare it in a piping bag. Pipe frosting over the top of each cherry to cover.
  • Take the piping bag again and pipe over the tops of each cupcake in a circular motion until the whole top is covered. Add sprinkles over the top and then top with another maraschino cherry (with stem) in the center. Serve immediately or refrigerate up to 5 days.
