Chocolate Strawberry Hand Pies

I love chocolate covered strawberries. It is always a treat when my husband or my dad give me some as a gift. I love strawberries SO much that when I was a toddler I refused to eat strawberries unless I picked them directly off the plant.

So of course, I just had to create a dessert that involved fresh strawberries and a yummy chocolate hazelnut spread. The combination of strawberries and chocolate hazelnut spread is just a match made in heaven and the perfect combination for any dessert, but most especially for any Valentine’s dessert.

Ingredients

  • cup strawberries fresh and diced
  • 1 cup chocolate hazelnut spread
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 box puff pastry
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • sprinkles
  • tap water
  • flour

Instructions

  • In a large bowl combine the diced strawberries, cornstarch, and granulated sugar. Stir to coat the strawberries and set aside.
  • Place the puff pastry flat on the floured counter top and roll with a rolling pin to smooth out any wrinkles. Cut the pastry into 4 equal squares. Spread the chocolate hazelnut spread over the middle of each square of pastry leaving at least a half inch from the edges clear. Spoon a couple of tablespoons of the diced strawberries over the spread.
  • Take the beaten egg and add a couple of tsp of tap water and beat again. Then use the egg/water mixture and brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg.
  • Fold the pastry over the strawberry chocolate filling and press the edges together with a fork. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Finish all of the squares of the pastry and place on the baking sheet. Use the rest of the beaten egg to brush the tops of the pastries and then sprinkle festive sprinkles over top. Raw sugar also works.
  • Bake in a 400°F preheated oven for 12-14 minutes or until the puff pastry is puffed up and the edges are turning brown. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to a week.
